WordPress Plugin: Inline (Collapsible) More Link

This plugin allows you to insert “more” links into your post. This differs from the default WordPress “more” link in that it does not take you to the single post page to reveal the rest of the content — it will show you the rest of the post immediately, in real time, without loading a new page.

By inserting the special text sequence into your HTML (<!–inline-more–> by default) or clicking the new toolbar button in the WYSIWYG editor, you can divide your post anywhere you wish. Since the special text sequence is different from WordPress’ own, you can still use it wherever you want to — you can even combine both in one post if you want to.

This version is WordPress 2.1 Compatible.

Updated: Feb 10, 2007: Another small fix for WordPress 2.1
It’s come to my attention that the inline more plugin was cuasing problems with the visual editor. This has been fixed (just a small JS issue). You only need to upload the updated editor_plugin.js file; see the readme for details.

Updated: Feb 06, 2007: Fix for WordPress 2.1
Download the newest package (beta 1.1) to get MoreLink to work with WordPress 2.1. There are no changes other then getting it to work. WordPress 2.1 broke it because of the new feature that lets you define your own “Read More” text for the default ‘more’ tag; it was interfering with the inline tag. You just have to upload the new files and run an upgrade script. See the readme for upgrade instructions.

First I want to thank you for this great WP plugin! I have a few questions about this plugin and I hope you can answer them.

If I use the plugin I get always to options: Read more… or Read more right here… »

But I only need “Read more..” .. How can I remove “Read more right here?”

And can I change “Read more..” to my own language (Lees meer..)??

  2. kapeka Says:

    Nice plugin.

Could you do this with the “excerpt reloaded” plugin, too?

  3. Roberlan Says:

Hi, i downloaded and install your plugin. Is very cool (and useful). But i have a question: how i change the default text “show More” and “Show Less”. I need to put in portuguese. I tried to edit the plugin in the plugin editor, but i have lots of problems and errors in my blog after the edtion. Is that possible to change this texts?

For some reason doesn’t seem to work on my site. am running wp2 and k2.
    Any clues ?

  5. Enviro Says:

Hi, I used your plugin too and it is very useful for me.

  6. berry Says:

Is there a wp1.5 version of this plugin as well? Please send me an e-mail if there is…

  7. musikboy Says:

Hellooo from Spain! This plugin is great! just one question for a google addict as me: can google bot index the content that is hidden? Thank you!!

  8. lancelottjones Says:

Hey, great plugin, but it doesn’t seem to work for me. I’m using WP 2.0.1. The plugin shows up, and I can activate it, but nothing happens. No buttons showup, and when I try to insert in the post, it doesn’t do anything. Any clue as to what may be the problem?

  9. J.J. Says:

Hi, same as lancelottjones above. Activated and nothing. WP 2.0.1. No button shows up in editor.

  10. J.J. Says:

do i need to load individual files into the plugins directories, or drop in the entire folders? plug not showing up when activated.

  11. J.J. Says:

I am having the same problem as lancelottjones above. No quicktag button shows up and nothing happens when i insert in editor. Any help would be great!

  12. Chris Says:

    Sorry guys!

Hellooo from Spain! This plugin is great! just one question for a google addict as me: can google bot index the content that is hidden? Thank you!!

Hi musikboy. I’m not quite sure if SE’s pick up on it, I’ll have to ask a SE guru ;)

lancelottjones and J.J: What happens when you insert the special token: <!–more|inline–>

Does it work then? Is it just the button that isn’t showing up? The button is only available for the WYSIWYG editor, the plaintext editor doesn’t have it at the moment.

The only thing that would make the plugin do nothing when activated (AFAICS, anyway) is if the template file didn’t exist. Make sure that /wp-content/plugins/MoreLink/collapsible_more_link.tpl.php is there. So make sure the entire plugin is uploaded all to the right places. Just open up your FTP client, go into the ‘upload’ folder, and select all the files/directories in it and choose to upload them all. Since the directory structure was preserved for you, all the files should go into the correct places automatically.

  13. J.J. Says:

    Hi, thanks for the help!

Good news! After reinstalling the plugin it works if I drop the quicktag in the editor, whereas last night before the reinstall it would not work. Not sure what I did wrong the first time, as install was the very same. EXCELLENT PLUGIN!

There still is not a button in my editor though. Not sure why, but at least the quicktag works. I can live with that.

I would like to change the style of the “more” text but am not sure how. I can change what it says and alignment, but need help changing the size and stuff. I tried your “making the default -more- act like -more|inline-” trick but it didn’t seem to work. Any help with that would be a bonus!

  14. Chris Says:

That tip is to make the default Wordpress ‘more’ inline, instead of having the default permalink functionality.

To style it, edit the template file (collapsible_more_link.tpl.php). If you need to have separate templates per theme, just copy the template file from the MoreLink plugin directory to your theme directory. If the plugin finds the template file in a theme directory, it will use it, otherwise it will use the one in the plugin directory by default.

  15. pinwheel Says:

Wonderful plugin, Chris. It works great!

I was wondering if there was a way to replace the “Show More >” text with an image? Also if there was a way to place more than one “Show More >” in a post.

Thanks again for the plugin. So much better than the wordpress default option.

  16. OldGuy Says:

Thanks for the 2.0 upgrade Chris. I changed the template to make it appear the way I wanted. You can see the effect on the post titled “How important are emergency skills?” at http://www.oldguy.us/blog

  17. Chris Says:

@pinwheel: Yes, edit the template file. You can either edit the master file located in the MoreLink plugin directory (it’s the one with “_tpl” in the filename), or copy that file over to your own theme directory and change the copy (this is so you can have multiple themes all with their own style).

    @OldGuy: Lookin’ good :)

  18. Shawna Says:

I finally got this plugin to work but now on IE I get an error at the bottom of the page after it finishes loading that says “Done, but with errors on the page”.

Does anyone know what causes this and how I may get rid of it?

    Thank you :)

  19. Shawna Says:

Chris, I hope you don’t mind and feel free to delete this post if you feel it improper. But because I could not get this one to do as I wanted, I went looking for another and found a pretty good one with admin options.I thought it may be helpful to anyone who could not get this to work right for them either.

  20. Cary Reid Says:

I have used the InlineAjaxMore plugin, that Shawna posted above…but it has compatibility problems with IE and maybe my theme. I prefer MoreLink myself

  21. Pramudita Says:

    Great Plugin !…..

    Thanks

  22. Shawna Says:

Well I cannot get either of them to work with 2.0.3 now :(

  23. Nina Says:

At my page it says “Read the rest of this entry”. Where can I edit that text, so that it writes this in German?

  24. Chris Says:

Edit the collapsible_more_link.tpl.php file which is the template file. You may also copy this file over to your theme directories if you wish to use a different template for each theme.

  25. Sergey Goldgaber Says:

I also can’t get this plugin to work with Wordpress 2.0.3

  26. Sergey Goldgaber Says:

Just to give you more details, I’m able to install and activate the plugin, but when I post “foobar” I only see “foobar” when I read the entry, without any kind of more link in between “foo” and “bar”.

  27. Pramudita Says:

I use WP 2.0.3 too, Sergey
this plugin working 100%. I like this plugin…

  28. KimMiau Says:

Hey sir, seems like it doesn’t load the page at the scene but it will lead to load a new page. However, it does show the rest of the content.

You may go to http://www.astronomynotes.net for referrence. Thank you in advance!

    Regards,

  29. Noach Stern Says:

Chris, thanks for THE tool I was searching wordpress plugin archives for. I’ve followed the conversations above, and have experienced pretty much each and every bug mentioned. I work across machines (mac & PC)and browsers (IE6,Firefox latest, Camino, Opera 9, Safari), and found that mysite+Netscape 8.1 on Windows XP is the only combo that displays the post with correctly, IE6 on XP is the only browser to show the more|inline button on the WYSIWYG editor (but fails to display posts correctly), and (just to complicate things further, all browsers on all machines show YOUR site perfectly! It’s probably not worth trying to find out exactly what goes wrong in each case (2 days has been enough for me!); better to hope for more robust editions of WP and browsers to make the headache go away.

Besides that, the tool is still RIGHT for what I want to do .. and now for my question: is there a way to get it to operate on static pages as well?

    All the best

    Noach

  30. Noach Stern Says:

hi again - a bit more experience helps. It’s possible that the source of most of those frustrating problems are due to lagging caches. A return to my Mac PowerBook today revealed Camino and other Mozilla-based browsers to be v happy with more|inline in posts and in the editor.

It still doesn’t solve/explain why I can’t get it to work in static pages.

  31. Zach Says:

In WP 2.0.4 I can’t seem to get the image to show up in the WYSIWIG. It functions perfectly, I just can’t get the button.

  32. Zach Says:

And… it works now. I’m not sure what happened, but it works again!

  33. Bob Says:

I’m afraid that after installing and activating the plugin, my blog is not functioning properly. In fact, posts won’t show up at all. I can get the Sidebar and its contents to show, but I can’t access the posts’ pages, static or archive pages. I’ve tried removing and reinstalling the plugin, to no avail.

  34. Bob Says:

Please disregard my last comment. The problem was another plugin. My apologies. I’m still having trouble getting the plugin to work, but I should be able to figure it out. Thanks!

  35. Knightcrawler Says:

I use Zoundry and the it doesn’t like the it replaces it with so where would I need to change this in the plugin to get it to work correctly ?

  36. Knightcrawler Says:

The code was deleted from my post above:

    ** becomes **

I use Zoundry and the it doesn’t like the it replaces it with so where would I need to change this in the plugin to get it to work correctly ?

  37. Knightcrawler Says:

The single - is not acceptable to zoundry so I change it to — and the word ajax. So it’s now –ajax– I’m going to leave the code tags out this time.

The problem is that Wordpress toolbar still inserts -more|inline- when you hit the button instead of –ajax– so which file do I need to edit to change this ?

  38. milo317 Says:

Great plugin, thanks for developing it.

  39. Alex Says:

    Hey Chris,

your plugin works great, I use it for longer time now. But I would like to have one change though. How is it possible to have the “Show More” link in the same line where the text is ending?

Right now I have it like that:

    and then we went to…

    Show More / Mehr sehen

I would like to have it like this:

and then we went to…Show More / Mehr sehen

    Thanks in advance

    Alex

I REALLY would like to use this with moo fx, Is that in any way possible and how would I go about making that work?

  41. matt Says:

I would REALLY love to have this work with moo fx. Is there a way to call two on click functions at the same time so it wil also trigger the effects.

Anyone who can help with this please hit me up.

  42. Jon Says:

    Hey Chris,

Thanks really for the plugin. It really did work for me and I find it really useful!

Somehow, I do realize that this only works for the main page of the site, which is my index.php file. I would just like to know whether is there any alternative way or something that would enable me to display on other pages too? For example, I want to add it for mynewpage.php too.

    Jon

  43. Patrix Says:

Somehow the inline more button seems to have vanished from my ‘Write Post’ bar after I upgraded to WP 2.0.5.

Does this plugin need an upgrade?

  44. Ian Barker Says:

When I insert it using the button on the editor, it inserts a link that takes me to a single post page. When I view the code from chroder.com and jesuscreed.org, there is some JavaScript in there that isn’t inserted when I use this plug-in. Any ideas as to why this is?

  45. The Finite Monkey Says:

Hey, Chris, thanks for the plugin, which I’ve been using for a while now. After finishing an overdue update of my Wordpres installation from 2.0.2 to 2.0.5, I decided to finally look at the “Markdown” plugin by Michael Fortin, and realized it was something I’d really like to use. The only problem was, when I activated it, I discovered that it doesn’t play nice with your Collapsible More plugin.

On the page for a previous release of your plugin, I saw that you recommended switching from Markdown to Textile, but I’ve looked at both and really prefer Markdown. Are you by any chance planning on updating CM to resolve the conflict? I’d rather not have to choose between deactivating either CM or Markdown, but as useful as CM has been to me, I can see Markdown being the one I’ll want to use more.

Thanks for the work you already did on this plugin, and thanks in advance if you can make it work with Markdown.

  46. buggs Says:

It works except for the tag in my WYSIWYG editor, it doesnt show. Any idea what might be wrong?

The text on the security code is hard to make out, had to try several times.

  47. Anon Says:

it’s not working anymore under the latest “Wordpress 2.1 Ella”

all I get is this text:

    |inline

Instead of the “show more” link.
and it behaves exactly like the regular default “more” link that takes you to the rest of the post on its individual post page.

A solution is appreciated. This is my most used/favorite plugin. I don’t want to lose it.

  48. Jen Says:

Thanks for a great plugin! However with the new WP release (2.1) I can’t get it to work properly: the “Read more” text is replaced by “|inline” and the link to hide the hidden text again is not visible/useable.

Any ideas on how to get it to work again?

  49. Darren/Kainz Uk Says:

Has anyone managed to get this plugin working with the latest Wordpress 2.1 release? I’ve used this plugin since I started my blog and haven’t had any issues until now.

Instead of displaying ‘Show More >’, after the upgrade it just shows ‘|inline’. I’m trying to find out more info right now.

  50. Wind Says:

    Not for WP 2.1 :(

  51. articlecity Says:

    Great

  52. Darren/Kainz Uk Says:

Thank you very much for updating the plugin. Now I’m got to re-edit my blog again lol

  53. izlesene Says:

    Great

  54. Tyler Says:

Thanks for this neat plug-in, but I must say, it’d be fantastic to see it work on static pages.

    Thanks!

  55. lolly Says:

Well, I uploaded it, but I think it was messing things up. I can’t insert images on my blog now, at least not with the wysiwyg editor, which is the only way I know how to do it. (I asked about my problem here: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/106523?replies=2) I don’t know what else could be causing this problem as this is the only thing I’ve changed on my blog and it used to work fine.

Problem is, I can’t seem to get this plugin off my blog. I started with deactivating it, and then I removed the files completely with Filezilla, but the Inline More icon is still there. How is this possible? And how do I fix it?

  56. Christopher Says:

The package was updated again on Feb 10 to fix the WYSIWYG problem, please download and reupload the JS file indicated in the readme.

To uninstall make sure you remove *all* files. There are some plugin files that go deep into tinymce plugin directory. Once you have done that you may need to clear your browser cache.

  57. lolly Says:

Thank you, I have the version at the top of this page. I think the problem is, I just realized I don’t have the latest version of Wordpress. Whoops!

  58. Boingo Says:

What would I need to change in order to have the inline feature apply to any post marked with the normal “more” tag?

Sorry for the duplicate post, as the first one got the commented more tag removed :)

  59. William Teach Says:

    Great plugin, thanks!

two questions for you: first, how can I get it to show the “show more” and “hide” tags on the left? They are showing on the right.

Also, is it possible to change the wording?

    I am using Wp 2.2

  60. Ian Says:

Any plans to upgrade the plug-in for WP 2.2? I love the plug-in and am bummed it doesn’t work with 2.2. Thanks.

  61. Carlos Says:

    Hi,

    Great plugin!

I’m having a little problem using it, though. I try to have my blogs validate, and when I use this plugin (and put the with the WYSIWYG editor, the validator complains there’s a missing in the last paragraph. Somehow the plugin is eating up that last , or something :)

    Thanks for any help!

  62. Libby Says:

Hi thanks for the plugin. I have downloaded it, uploaded it, and activated it, but the does not show up. The post shows in its entirely without a more link.

  63. Frank Says:

Hi, thanks for your plugin, that what i have been looking for a long time. But I uploaded it according to the note, but it doesn’t work. Anything I get wrong?

  64. Knight Says:

REQUEST: Any way to have the ‘collapse’ appear at the top so people could open it fully look at it and then collapse it if they didn’t want to read it?

  65. John Says:

Are you going to be upgrading this to work with wordpress 2.2?

  66. Erundur Says:

It doesn’t appear to work with Wordpress 2.3.

  67. Justin Cone Says:

Doesn’t appear to work with WP 2.3 either. Bummer.
