Moving (Again)

by Christopher on June 5th, 2009

Yes, I did move last year. But this time I’m moving out which is somehow entirely different.

My sister is going back to school in North Bay, Ontario. So I thought it was a good opportunity to move out. She needed a roommate, I needed a roommate. Bam, done deal.

The last couple weeks we’ve driven out there to take a look at apartments. It’s a very tiring trip, five to six hours both ways; so you’re in the car for a very long time. Who knew simply sitting in a car could be so exhausting.

Anyway, last week we went and saw a bunch of places, but nothing really came up. Just as we were about to leave, my sister — who is a brilliant people person — just happens to strike up a conversation with some guy smoking outside of an apartment building. Long story short, we got the phone number of his landlord, called him up, and discovered he had a room for rent.

This particular street has maybe 5 identical buildings. Every one uses the same design. When my sister first went to school in North Bay a few years ago, she got a room in one of these buildings. I loved that apartment — it was spacious for the cost and was just really cool. Great location, too. So I was delighted to hear there was another available.

We couldn’t see that particular apartment last weekend, which is why we went back today. Of course it’s exactly what we thought — but we had to make the trip just to be sure. Not to mention we needed to fill out the application forms anyway. We have a 99% chance of getting this one, or so the landlord says. He just needs to check up on our references and such before saying so for certainty.

I forgot my digital camera in the car when we went up to go see it, so here are a few snaps from my horrible cellphone.

It’s still really messy and dirty, the old tenants just moved out and the super hasn’t had a chance to clean/fix it up yet. But it should still give you an idea of what we’re looking at.

It’s got two good sized bedrooms, a nice big living room, and pretty nicely sized kitchen. We’re getting it for $750 a month plus hydro which will likely be another $50 a month. Of course, add on internet and a phone line to that, as well. Not bad for a two-bedroom apartment. It was cheaper a couple years ago, but the prices lately have skyrocketed.

I’m really excited! I really really hope we get this one. My sister keeps telling me not to get my hopes up. But I think our chances are pretty good. If we loose this one — oh well, back to the drawing board. There will be others.

If all goes well, I’ll be outta here and moved in (either this apartment or something else) by July 5th. Woot. I’m already having way way too much fun buying stuff — everything from dishes and cutlery, to looking at cheap furniture from the Amity store. I gotta watch out though, I’ll be poor soon enough ;-)

Update Jun 9, 2009: We got it! Woo.
